My professional background is in Preschool and Early years. Currently, I manage Dumfries Toy Library which runs in a children’s services centre. The centre is multi agency and is a ‘one stop shop’ for parents of children under 3 years of age requiring support services. As well as an extensive Toy Library, I deliver Stay and Play sessions, a Dad’s group and an Outdoors nature play session. Also I am involved in leading several ‘small tests of change’ as part of the Early Years Collaborative.
I have worked in accountancy and finance all my working life. My experience ranges from professional practice to financial services and banking to local and central government and statutory bodies. I have been contracting for the last ten years because I enjoy the variety and challenge this kind of work brings. Also I hold an SHNC in accounting and am a member of the Association of Accounting Technicians. In addition I have the Financial Planning Certificate and the Mortgage Advice qualification.
I joined the Border Crossing Media team in November 2009 and I’m currently the Managing Director where I run the sales and operations side of the business. As a member of the Market Research Society (MRS), with a MRS certificate in Market and Social Research I design and run all our research and analytics projects including the Action 6.3 Play at Home research project for the Play Strategy. It was on this project that I developed a clear passion for the rights and welfare of all children. Also I was nominated for Young Business Person of the Year 2014 by the Edinburgh Chamber of Commerce and sat on the Market Research Society Scotland’s committee in 2010/2011 and was the secretary in 2011/2012.
I’m the founder of Border Crossing Media; I have extensive experience of planning, developing and managing digital projects that provide a return on investment through the delivery of compelling online user experiences. In my role as lead consultant at Border Crossing Media I have fulfilled the role of Information Architect, User Experience Designer and Program Manager for client and in-house products. As a Father of two small boys I have my hands full most of the time and an expert in juggling work and play. I love nothing more than spending time with my children and watching them grow and develop.
I am a qualified banker by profession with 30+ years financial experience covering many different industry sectors. I have extensive practical business experience including areas relating to strategy and business planning, treasury, legal, financial accounting and risk management. I was formerly Managing Director, France and Belgium for Lloyds Banking Group responsible for all internal and external issues in those countries. I have a great interest in the development of children and strongly believe that giving a child a stable and happy childhood can set a child up for life. I am married with two grown-up children and three grandchildren.
My work has involved working in the public, private and third sector (Shelter, Age Concern, Edinburgh Council and Scottish Government). From this I bring a wealth of experience working in varying roles as a press officer, campaigner, fundraiser and senior manager. I have been a mentor for young people with Move On. Also I have post graduate qualifications in public relations, journalism and housing management; and currently I’m studying Fine Art at Newcastle University.
